Vorfahrt – Art in the charged field between private and public

What happens when art abandons such establishment venues as museums and galleries to go on display in a space where everyday living is taking place? The »Vorfahrt« art project addressed this question in a broad-based experiment. Under the supervision of exhibition organiser Wolfgang Seitz, Birkenwaldstrasse in Stuttgart was transformed for the space of seven weeks into an extraordinary »art zone«. Balconies, windows, front gardens and garages thus became venues for exhilarating encounters with leading-edge positions in contemporary art.

Move House

From backpacks to luxury yachts, tents to trailer homes, the newest book from the author of »Blownup«, »Where’s my Space Age« and »Xtreme Houses« follows architecture designed to follow mankind. For most of us, »house« means stability, structure and permanence. In an age of increasing population and technological gains, today’s mobile society has resulted in a demand for portable dwellings. This eclectic mix of forty innovative projects illustrates how architects, self-builders and artists are pushing the limits of form and material to answer the new demands for portability.

CBGB – Decades of Graffiti

CBGB is little more than a bar, a stage and two bathrooms. Since the club opened in 1973, very little has changed about the physical space, with one exception: the graffiti. The club has never tried to stop its patrons from adding to the mosaics of ink and pencil that literally cover every square inch of the club's walls. As grimy and layered with ink as they are, the walls contain the history of the club, from the musicians to the fans. Without this book, there would be no record of these graphic treatments of the punk aesthetic, especially since the club will soon no longer exist.
