Greece, as the word alphabet indicates, is the birthplace of European writing, but in the past it can hardly be said to have excelled in typographic production. For several years now, the independent type foundry »Parachute« has been getting things moving and causing a stir with its successful typefaces. In point of fact, this Hellenistic parachute touched down back in 1999, when Panos Vassiliou, a graduate of the University of Toronto, decided to make a career of his love of design and typography. It wasnt until 2001, however, that his company became a one-stop supplier of typefaces. Twelve freelance designers have now combined forces under Parachutes umbrella, with the core team formed by five permanent employees in Athens. Panos Vassiliou continues to run the entire operation. Today, Parachute is the largest font supplier for most publishing houses and advertising agencies in Greece. Added to this is a strong network with globally active agencies such as BBDO, McCann Erickson, TBWA, MetaDesign and JWT, as well as magazines such as National Geographic, Playboy, FHM, Elle, Vogue
